Located on China's second terrain step, at the transition from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the Loess Plateau.

MICROCLIMATE / TERRAIN

Temperate continental semi-arid climate with ample sunshine, limited rainfall, and a marked day-night temperature range; the urban area is about 1,520 metres above sea level.

The Yellow River runs through a long east-west valley basin in western Loess Plateau, with mountains enclosing the urban area to the north and south.
